Información adicional sigue aquí:

In addition to the summer school in St. Petersburg, Russia (28-31 August 2012 “Natural Resources: Historical Ideas, Exploration, and Exploitation”) the ESEH will co-sponsor a second summer school at the Abbey of Flaran, France, from 27 to 30 June 2012. The Flaran summer school will be dedicated to Histoire rurale vs. histoire environnementale? (Rural vs. Environmental History). The convener is Professor Emmanuel Huertas of the University of Toulouse.

The two summer schools are not seen as competitors but as complementary projects that reflect the wide range of research projects covered by ESEH. They will take place in different parts of Europe (south-west/north-east), in different environments (rural/urban) and at different times (June/August). In France, preference will be given to doctoral students and immediate postdocs who speak both French and English and who have worked in medieval or early modern environmental history. The focus will be on methodological issues and the course will be lecture-oriented. By contrast, the St. Petersburg summer school aims to engage doctoral students who work on modern or contemporary history; it will offer multiple lectures but its focus will also be on the discussion of the doctoral projects with peers and experts.

Thanks to the generosity of a number of French sponsors, to a contribution from the Higher School of Economics, and to a private donation to ESEH, we are now happy to announce that accommodation will be free for all successful applicants, and a small stipend (250 Euros in the case of Flaran, a flexible amount for St. Petersburg) is available to cover a part of the travel costs.

The deadline for submissions for both summer schools is fast approaching: 15 May 2012 for the St. Petersburg Summer School, and 28 May 2012 for the Summer School in Flaran.

For more information about both summer schools, please visit the ESEH website @ www.eseh.org or get in touch with the Chair of the Summer School Committee, Dr Dolly Jørgensen: dolly@jorgensenweb.net

The Research Center for Urban Cultural History at the University of Massachusetts Boston is offering a 3-4 week short-term visiting fellowship for Spring 2013. The RCUCH Flaherty Visiting Fellow will pursue a research project pertaining to urban cultural history; the project must be interdisciplinary, and be focused on the cultural history of cities, urban life, urban networks, urban materials or urban experience.

We define urban cultural history broadly; projects treating pre-urban sites as well as contemporary situations fall within the fellowship’s parameters. During the fellowship period the Fellow is required to offer a Faculty Lecture for the RCUCH on work-in-progress related to the research project, and to provide a talk for a graduate seminar or student group where this can be arranged; other than these lectures, and the research project itself, the Fellow will also have numerous opportunities to attend on-campus lectures and symposia, and to take advantage of lectures, exhibits, and other events in Boston and its environs, The RCUCH invites applications, giving preference to scholars at associate professor rank or above.

The University of Massachusetts Boston is located on Columbia Point, just south of downtown Boston and accessible by the Red Line subway or by car. Adjacent to the university are the Massachusetts State Archives and the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. The Massachusetts Historical Society, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the Boston Public Library at Copley Square, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of African American History, Boston Symphony Hall, and the Boston Athenaeum are all nearby in downtown Boston.

The fellowship includes travel and a stipend of $2000. The RCUCH Fellow will also have use of a desk in the RCUCH Office and internet service, as well as a university library card, access to the Healey Library’s resources and databases, and interlibrary loan privileges. A housing allowance is not included in the fellowship.

Those interested in applying should send a 500-600 word project proposal indicating the proposed dates of stay, a c.v., and two letters of support. The proposed fellowship stay should take place between January 30 and May 1, 2013. Fellowship applications should be sent by email to the RCUCH Director at Elizabeth.Fay@umb.edu; application deadline is September 1, 2012.

El próximo congreso de la ESEH se realizará en Munich del 20 al 24 de agosto de 2013.

La página web ya está operativa. Lean el mensaje del presidente.

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Members of the ESEH:

The next conference of the European Society for Environmental History is being planned apace! It is exciting to report that we now have a website for the 2013 conference, which will take place in Munich from 20 to 24 August. At www.eseh2013.org we will regularly post and update information about the conference venue, hotels, sponsors, etc. In collaboration with his team members from different corners of Europe, Program Committee Chair Peter Coates has issued a call for papers, and you will soon be able to submit proposals for conference sessions, roundtables, papers, posters, and other, more experimental forms of communicating scholarship. Online proposal submissions will be accepted from 15 May right through until 15 September 2012. The conference will explore Circulating Natures: Water-Food-Energy from the diverse perspectives of environmental history. The complete text of the call and more information can be found on both the ESEH website (www.eseh.org) and on the conference site (www.eseh2013.org).

We are also very happy to announce that the ESEH will hold its third annual Summer School in St. Petersburg, Russia, this year. The event will take place from 28 to 31 August 2012, and will be hosted by ESEH Vice President Julia Lajus (Senior Research Fellow at the newly opened Department of History, National Research University, School of Economics in St. Petersburg, and Director of the Center for Environmental and Technological History at the European University at St. Petersburg), and co-sponsored by the ESEH, the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society in Munich, and the Estonian Centre for Environmental History, KAJAK.The theme of the Summer School is Natural Resources: Historical Ideas, Exploration, and Exploitation, and a call for papers will be published on the ESEH website in due course.

The upcoming issue of Environment and Society will feature an ESEH notepad on Environmental History in Estonia written by Ulrike Plath from Tallinn University. Environmental studies and environmental history have become thriving fields in Estonia in recent years, and the new Estonian Centre for Environmental History (ESTCEH/ Eesti Keskkonnaajaloo Keskus, KAJAK) was founded just a few months ago.

Finally, let me mention that the Board of the ESEH will meet in Szeged, Hungary, upon the invitation of Andrea Kiss, from 27 to 29 April 2012. Please, if you have ideas for new ESEH projects, or concerns of any kind, let us know and we will make sure to address them in our meeting.

With very best wishes to all of you,

Christof Mauch

ESEH – President’s Newsletter 2/ 2012

This is just a very short newsletter with some good news that reached us only a week ago.

1) In addition to the summer school in St.

The deadline for submissions for both summer schools is fast approaching: 15 May 2012 for the St. Petersburg Summer School, and 28 May 2012 for the Summer School in Flaran.

For more information about both summer schools, please visit the ESEH website @ www.eseh.org or get in touch with the Chair of the Summer School Committee, Dr Dolly Jørgensen: dolly@jorgensenweb.net.

2) We are still looking for one or two lecturers who work on medieval or early modern rural environmental history and would like to join us in Flaran for the summer school. The cost for travel and accommodation will be covered by the organizers. Please send your letter of interest electronically to Christof Mauch <mauch@lmu.de> and to Dolly Jørgensen <dolly@jorgensenweb.net>.

3) The site selection committee (Petra van Dam, Riin Magnus, Christof Mauch, Timo Myllyntaus, and Christian Rohr) is asking for proposals for the Biennual ESEH conference in 2015. The location will be announced in 2013 at the Munich conference. If you are interested in hosting the conference please send an e-mail to mauch@lmu.de by 1 August 2012.

Finally, the new password for free access to our journal Environment and History will reach you in May 2012. If you have not received the password by 1 June, please get in touch with ESEH Secretary Phia Steyn (m.s.steyn@stir.ac.uk)

With very best wishes, also from all the members of the ESEH board, who met in Szeged last weekend,

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Members of the ESEH:

There is so much going on in the European Society for Environmental History (ESEH) that we felt that all of you should be kept up to date about the many opportunities in environmental history, and about activities and projects that ESEH members are engaged in in Europe and abroad.

This Newsletter will from now on appear more or less regularly – about four to six times every year. All members will automatically get this Newsletter unless they ask us to unsubscribe.

The most exciting news is today’s launch of the New ESEH Website (http://eseh.org/)
For several years the ESEH website has been running on a server at Roskilde University, and we owe our Danish colleagues many thanks for managing the website so effectively for such a long time. Following the recent news that Roskilde was no longer in a position to support the server, we decided to move the website to a private provider; this will safeguard our independence in the future. More importantly, we seized the moment to completely redesign our website, and Wilko Graf von Hardenberg, the Chair of the ESEH Website Committee, deserves a huge thank you for creating a new site that is both much more colourful and also easier to navigate. Among many new features, the website boasts a slider on the homepage for an easy overview of our main news topics. We have also created new pages for each of our regional groups, and incorporated prominent links to our social media presence.

We are also excited that we are able to invite all ESEH members to become co-authors in our Arcadia project, which is a jointly sponsored cooperation between the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) and ESEH. Arcadia is an online European environmental history resource with short, encyclopedia-like articles, and genuinely new digital content and images that together present a selection of significant sites, events, and organizations in Europe. You will find more information about Arcadia on the ESEH website.

As you know, one of the advantages of ESEH membership is free access to the current and most recent versions of the journal Environment and History. From now on, the Notepad (the space that Environment and History provides to ESEH free of charge) will introduce institutions and research projects in different regions. The first and upcoming issue will feature an essay on Environmental History in Portugal written by Inês Amorium (University of Porto) and by ESEH Vice President Stefania Barca (CES, University of Coimbra).

The ESEH board decided in its autumn 2011 meeting that the society will offer at least one Summer School per year. Two potential organizers have shown an interest in sponsoring a 2012 summer school for ESEH members/doctoral students. We are still waiting to hear back from the potential organizers but we are optimistic that we can send out a call for papers no later than March or April.

Finally we would like to ask you to mark your calendar for the 2013 biannual ESEH conference. The conference will take place in Munich, Germany, from August 20-24, 2013. It will be organized by the Rachel Carson Center, and a program committee headed by Peter Coates will soon accept proposals for our biannual that will be launched under the name “Circulating Natures: Water—Food—Energy.”

With very best wishes to all of you for a successful 2012,
Christof Mauch
President, ESEH

If you have news items or information for this Newsletter, please feel free to send it to both the Secretary of ESEH, Phia Steyn (Phia Steyn m.s.steyn@stir.ac.uk) and the President Christof Mauch (mauch@lmu.de).

Aiming to go beyond concerns with recent and forthcoming changes in climate conditions which have dominate research in environmental studies, but without excluding them, this conference adopts a long term perspective on living beings adjustment to nature. Although framed by Environmental History the conference also assumes an holistic vision, establishing a dialogue with other fields of knowledge not only within the Humanities, but also the natural sciences, as Ecology and Biogeography.

Within this interdisciplinary approach, participants will reflect upon responses to weather and climate, as well as upon their consequences over ecological, economic, social and cultural contexts.

The program is organized around four topics: Erosion and population; Imagined landscapes; Space and climate; Human responses to weather – building and praying.

The closing conference addresses the responses to climate change in the XXI century.

Spécial L’invention politique de l’environnement

Nº 113, janvier-mars 2012

The light-green society. Ecology and Technological modernity in France, 1960-2000.
