ESEH2015 meeting registration open

Registration for the ESEH meeting in Versailles, France, 30 June to 4 July 2015, is now available! Register at http://www.eseh2015.eu/register/. Discounted registration is only available through March 31st, so register now. You should renew your membership in ESEH for 2015 prior to registration in order to qualify for the member discount. Renewing is easy: go to http://eseh.org/membership/renew-your-membership/ to renew today.

Note that you must register by March 31st if you have been accepted to give an oral presentation or poster in order to stay on the program.

Present a poster at ESEH2015!

The Programme Committee is issuing a second call for poster presentations for the 2015 annual meeting in Versailles, France. Note that 2015 marks the first time ESEH will be offering a prize for the best poster! The posters will be judged at the conference by a committee who will award €100 to the winner and €50 to runner-up.

Poster proposals should include an abstract of 200‐300 words. Posters will be on display during the Congress and authors will have an opportunity to introduce their research in brief (approx. three minute) oral presentations in a special plenary session. The conference language is English. Submissions and presentations in other languages cannot be accepted.

Deadline for submissions: 20 February, notifications will be sent out by 25 February (in time to take advantage of early registration). Submit your poster proposal online.

Travel grants for attending the 2015 biennial conference

ESEH will make available a limited number of grants and registration fee waivers for ESEH members who will deliver papers or present posters at the 2015 ESEH Conference in Versailles. These travel grants are intended to support travel to Versailles and are targeted at those who would not be able to attend the conference without external support. ESEH will not be able to provide the full costs associated with attending the conference; the grants are intended as an encouragement – not a full subsidy.

Applications for support must include a short cover letter explaining why financial help is required, an estimate of travel and other costs, a CV, the title of the paper/poster and confirmation of its acceptance, and personal contact information. Send all applications to the chair of the Travel Grant Committee Carry van Lieshout (Carry.Van-Lieshout@nottingham.ac.uk) with ‘ESEH travel grant application’ in the subject line. The deadline for applications is 30 April 2015.

Opportunity to serve the ESEH Community

ESEH invites all members to nominate board candidates for election. Elections will be held at the 2015 meeting.

Nominations of candidates for all posts on the Board are welcome, which includes: President, two Vice-presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, as well as for the Financial Control Committee. Additionally we ask for nominations for Regional Representatives, especially for the following regions which require new representatives: Benelux, France, Spain, and German-speaking countries. For more information on ESEH, its offices and their description, please have a look at our statutes.

Send nominations to the chair of the Nominating Committee: Jan Oosthoek (kjwoosthoek@eh-resources.org) by 1 February 2015 at the latest. Please include a one-page CV, or link to the webpage of the nominee, with details of the person’s current post, previous posts, degrees, main publications, research grants and projects, experience in academic societies, and any other information you find relevant.

Nominations of others will require the Nominating Committee to confirm willingness to serve.

Self-nominations are possible and will be automatically included on the ballot. The Nominating Committee will follow-up on all nominations. ESEH has been working over the last few years to make the process of nominations and elections more open and democratic, and we have introduced competitive elections wherever possible. Thus nominations will be accepted for all positions regardless if the current holder is eligible for re-election.

Small Workshop Grants for 2015

For the second year in a row, the new ESEH Board has decided to issue a Call for Proposals for Funding for small workshops and conferences to increase support for environmental history activities in Europe. The Board intends to award 500€ to up to two proposals. A proposal of up to 2 pages should include (1) the name, date, location and theme of the conference/workshop, (2) an overview of the program, (3) a projected number and type of attendees, (4) an overview of the total budget, other financial sources, and a description of how the 500€ would benefit the activity, and (5) a short biographical paragraph about the organiser (who must be an ESEH member).

The deadline has been extended to 15 February 2015! Submit proposals to secretary@eseh.org.

Cities and Mountains Summer School

The LARHRA (Rhône-Alpes Historical Research Unit), in cooperation with the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the RUCHE and with the support of the European Society for Environmental History (ESEH), is pleased to announce that a four-day thematic summer school “Cities and Mountains. Environmental and Health Risks : A Socio-Historical perspective” will take place in Lyon, Yenne and Grenoble, immediately before the ESEH 8th International Conference (Versailles, 30 June – 3 July 2015).

There are three thematic clusters, around which young researchers are invited to apply: (1) Environmental and health risks in cities, (2) Environmental risks in mountains, and (3) Mountain cities and towns as specific environments with specific issues

The summer school aims to gather around 15 graduate / post-doctoral students together with junior and senior scholars. Each participant is expected to give an oral presentation of 15-20 minutes which will be discussed in thematic sessions chaired by senior scholars. The four-day seminar will also feature lectures from scholars, field trips and informal discussion among scholars and students.

At the end of the School, students will have to produce either: a scientific poster about their work to be presented at the ESEH Conference; a draft of an article for the ARCADIA project (http://www.environmentandsociety.org/arcadia); or a report about the summer school (6-10 pages).

To apply, students are required to send to Stéphane Frioux (stephane.frioux@univ-lyon2.fr) the following documents in English: (1) Curriculum vitae; (2) an abstract and outline of their doctoral thesis or other work that states the main challenges and research questions to be discussed at the summer school (500 words); (3) a letter of support from a faculty member.

There is no registration fee. All accepted participants will receive free accommodation, meals and transportation DURING the four-day seminar, but they are responsible for their own transportation to and from Lyon, France, where they should arrive on June 25 as the summer school will start on June 26, in the morning.

Application deadline: 22 March 2015. Answer will be given before April 11.
