ESEH Newsletter

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Members of the ESEH:

Only four months until the biennial ESEH conference starts in Munich. We have already registered participants from more than two dozen different countries and from every single continent, and we are convinced that the number of participants will set a new record, with a higher attendance than at the World Congress in Copenhagen.

I am writing to you today to remind you of an early bird option. ESEH members who register before 31 May 2013 will profit from a discounted registration fee (50 or 100 Euros, depending on your income level). This fee includes all meals, receptions, academic events, one excursion, entry to the exhibition hall, and much more. To register, click here.

Additionally, I am happy to report that ESEH travel grants will be available for participants hoping to attend the ESEH conference in Munich. At its meeting in March 2013, the board of the ESEH decided to dedicate 6000 euros (this amount comprises all of its currently available funds) to support travel to Munich, targeted at those who would not be able to attend the conference without external support. Conference fee waivers will also be available. The deadline for applying for fee waivers and travel support is 31 May 2013. For more information visit the website at http://www.eseh2013.org/funding-information.html

I am especially happy to report that the ESEH will offer its first Writing and Publication Workshop to its members (with preferential booking for member who are not native speakers of English). The workshop will be held immediately before the start of the conference on Wednesday 21 August 2013 from 10am–4pm at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, LMU Munich. Topics will include article writing techniques, publisher expectations, and book and grant proposal writing. ESEH secretary Dr Phia Steyn (Stirling University, UK) will serve as convener of the workshop. Mentors and presenters include Dr Dolly Jørgensen, Umeå University, Sweden; Prof David Moon, University of York, UK (Editor of the ESEH book series with Berghahn Books), Dr Sarah Johnson, (White Horse Press, publisher of the journal Environment and History), and Katie Ritson (Senior Editor, Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society).

There will be no fees for attending the writing workshop but spaces are limited to 30 participants and ESEH members only. Please send applications to: Dr Phia Steyn, e-mail: m.s.steyn@stir.ac.uk by 31 May 2013. Details are on conference website: http://www.eseh2013.org/writing-and-publication-workshop.html.

There are plenty of other things coming up besides the ESEH conference. Here the news in brief:

• Nominations to the board of the ESEH requested

The European Society for Environmental History is inviting all members to nominate candidates for election to the board. Elections will be held at the Ordinary General Meeting at the ESEH conference in Munich, Germany, on 23 August 2013. Nominations for candidates for all posts on the Board are welcomed, i.e. President, Vice-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, and also for the Financial Control Committee. Please send nominations to the chair of the Nominating Committee: Martin Schmid, Alpen-Adria Universität, Austria (martin.schmid@aau.at) by 4 June 2013 at the latest (according to the statutes, nominations must be sent to the Nominating Committee at least 80 days before the Ordinary General Meeting). Please include a one-page CV or link to the webpage of the nominee, with details of the person’s current post, previous posts (where relevant), degrees, main publications, research grants and projects, experience in academic societies, and any other relevant information.

· Call for paper proposals for NIES Research Symposium VIII, “Landscape, Environment, Emotion”

This symposium is being organized by the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies (NIES) in partnership with select research environments at the universities of Turku, Tampere and Oulu. It will take place at the Pori campus of the University of Turku, Finland, 25-27 September 2013.
The deadline for paper proposals is 1 May 2013. For more information please see the attached call. For questions regarding submissions, please contact Professor Maunu Häyrynen, mauhay@utu.fi .
For questions concerning the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and updates on the symposium, visit the NIES website: http://www.kth.se/abe/nies.

· Call for Candidates: Doctoral Program “Environment and Society,” Rachel Carson Center, LMU Munich

Anyone considering a PhD in the environmental humanities is invited to apply to the doctoral program “Environment and Society” at the Rachel Carson Center/LMU Munich. The doctoral program brings together a range of disciplines and both intra and extra-university expertise, providing a stimulating and supportive environment for international scholars interested in understanding the complex interactions between the environment and its human inhabitants. Candidates for the winter semester 2013/2014 should submit an application by 1 June. Further details are on the website: http://www.en.proenviron.carsoncenter.uni-muenchen.de/aktuelles/call-for-candidates/index.html

· Call for Papers: Histories of Transport, Mobility, and Environment, Journal of Transport History, Special Issue

‘Conquest’, defilement and intrusion have been labels since pinned on many transport investments and mass traveling. Conversely, there have been transport projects linked with landscape beautification. The Journal of Transport History invites scholarly contributions that examine the historical relationship between transport and mobility and the natural environment for a proposed Special Issue scheduled for December 2014, to be edited by Thomas Zeller (author of Driving Germany: the Landscape of the German Autobahn, 1930-1970) and JTH editor Gordon Pirie. Final submissions for the JTH Special Environmental Issue will be due by 5 August 2013. For the full call, please see the website: http://manchester.metapress.com/content/122747.

More than one hundred new members have joined our society in the last couple of months. Thus I would like to take this opportunity to remind all ESEH members that they have free access to the electronic version of the most recent issues of the journal Environment and History, published by White Horse Press. The password for all 2013 issues of the journal is available by contact here if your are member of the ESEH.

Finally, a request: some ESEH members are listed with more than one e-mail address. Please let me know (at mauch@lmu.de) if you want to have one of the addresses removed from the master list.

With very best wishes from Munich,

Christof Mauch

Director of the KTH Environmental

Humanities Laboratory

See here: http://www.kth.se/en/om/work-at-kth/vacancies/director-of-the-kth-environmental-humanities-laboratory-1.342346

The Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment seeks a director for the newly established KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory.

KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 15,000 first and second level students and more than 1,600 doctoral students. KTH has almost 4,300 employees.

The School of Architecture and built environment focuses on future of our societies, on how our cities, buildings and infrastructure should be designed. We study growth, technology and environment, as well as ethical considerations and risks. Our curriculum and our research are based on several academic disciplines: engineering and the technical sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences.

TThe Division of History of Science, Technology and Enrivonment is part of the Department of Philosophy and History of Technology at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, one of ten schools at the Royal Institute of Technology in central Stockholm. The Division is research focused with some teaching on the level of bachelor and master. The PhD programme, founded in 1992, has on average a dozen active students enrolled. Including faculty, visiting researchers and PhD students the total number of academic staff is 25.

The KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory has been newly created, based on a private donation and matching KTH funds. The overarching goal is to create a post-disciplinary environment in which teaching, research and PhD education are integrated to modernize and develop the humanities for sustainable development.

The position as director is a two-year position with the possibility of prolongation. A major task during the initial build-up phase of the Laboratory is to lead and coordinate organization of research activities and projects and in building links with strategically important partners – institutes, departments, etcetera – internationally, but also within Sweden. The work also entails organizing conferences and workshops, communicating externally and writing grant applications and proposals to secure third-party funding for new projects and programs. The position includes independent research time within the Laboratory’s general field of interest. Teaching could also be possible. The director will work closely with the Head of Division and other senior faculty.

The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent and have demonstrable research experience in history of science, technology or the environment or in another relevant environmental humanities field.

To apply, please send your cover letter, CV and a 2-page declaration of what you would want to achieve if granted the position. Please, also include names of three persons whom we could contact for references.
